THE BRIEF

The client is considering a change in the material used for their existing adult diaper and seeks to evaluate whether the performance of the new material meets or exceeds that of the current version before moving forward with full-scale production.

The research aims to assess the new product across key attributes, including absorbency, comfort, fit, durability, breathability and overall user experience, to ensure that it maintains or improves upon the quality standards of the existing product – where this would determine if the new product is ready for full production.

OUR APPROACH

To achieve the research objectives, we have conducted a Quantitative Home Usage Test (HUT) which consists of 3 key steps to thoroughly evaluate the new adult diaper:

  1. Pre-Placement Interview
The first step in the HUT is the Pre-Placement Interview, designed to gather insights into respondents’ current usage patterns of adult diapers. During this phase, respondents evaluate the existing product across key attributes such as absorbency, comfort, fit, durability, breathability and overall user experience. They also provide their first impressions of the new adult diaper, based on its appearance and texture, before using it.
  2. Diary Record
The second step involves respondents keeping a short diary to document their experience throughout the 9-day test period. Each time they change the diaper, they are required to record their changing behaviour and observations on the diaper’s performance. This diary helps capture real-time feedback on the performance and user experience of the new product.
  3. Post-Usage Interview
The final step is the Post-Usage Interview, where respondents are revisited to discuss their overall experience with the new diaper. This includes assessing satisfaction levels, evaluating the product’s performance based on the same key attributes, and making comparisons between the current and new diaper. Additionally, respondents’ purchase intentions towards the new product are gauged, providing valuable insights into the potential market response.

THE OUTPUT

The research provided the client with valuable insights into the usage and changing patterns of adult diaper users, as well as a detailed comparison of the new diaper’s performance against the current product across key attributes.

Through the study, the client gained a clear understanding of user satisfaction and dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the impact of the material change on overall experience.

Additionally, the research highlighted the key strengths and areas for improvement in the new product, offering actionable recommendations to optimize its performance based on real-world usage patterns.

This enabled the client to make informed decisions before proceeding with full-scale production.
